Registrars of Probate

Closures and amalgamation of probate courts in Nova Scotia have reduced the number to eleven, serving the eighteen counties in the province. Some of the original files remain in the repositories where they were before amalgamation so special arrangements may be necessary to view a particular file. Two or more visits may be required; to view the index and to view the original file. Retrieval may only be available on certain days of the week. Charges vary.

Most probate court records in Nova Scotia have been microfilmed by The Genealogical Society of Utah and while the index reel may cover the period up to the date of filming only the films for records dated prior to 1900 have generally been released. A set of films is available at the Nova Scotia Archives and the films may be ordered and viewed at any Family History Centre operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints worldwide.
